Making Christmas Magical: A Midwest Mom's Guide to Memorable Holiday Celebrations in the Ozarks

For many, Christmas calls to mind an array of warm, cozy images, from snowy

landscapes, Rudolph and Frosty, and twinkling lights to traditional Christmas hymns, candles, and festive meals served on a family table. These images of comfort and joy are an integral part of Christmas lore in the American psyche. In our busy and bustling daily lives, the warm nostalgia of Christmas can sometimes be elusive. Sometimes, a getaway is just what you need to feel like you are home for the holidays.

Midwest winter destinations offer not only entertainment and relaxation, but also

unforgettable holiday experiences. Here you will find light displays, outdoor and indoor

attractions, and festivities that will spark your imagination, inspire the holiday spirit, and leave you with lasting memories. Whether you are in the mood for a Midwest holiday road trip or an extended stay, the area offers something for everyone.

A tour of Midwest seasonal attractions would not be complete without a visit to the live

music capital of the world, Branson, MO, where you will encounter a quaint, hometown holiday atmosphere, complete with cozy cabins, fireside charm, holiday concerts, festivals, and Christmas markets. One of the most popular Christmas attractions in Branson is the Silver Dollar City theme park’s annual “An Old Time Christmas” festival. The event features all the sights and sounds of an 1880s village, and it is one of the most festive events for families in the Midwest during the holiday season. Silver Dollar City has one of the most spectacular holiday lights displays in the Midwest, featuring over 6.5 million lights. This year, the festival will feature Rudolph’s Holly Jolly Christmas light parade and the Frisco Sing-Along Steam train that will take passengers on a tour of the City lights, ending in the countryside with a retelling of the Biblical Christmas story. A visit to Branson, MO is sure to get you in the holiday spirit with its signature music and magic.

From Branson, hop on I-44 and journey toward St. Louis, where you will encounter an

incredible selection of Midwest holiday and winter activities!

Be sure to make a stop in Rolla and enjoy the many holiday events happening there,

including the Lichternacht “Light the Night” celebration on Friday Dec. 1 at 5:30 p.m. and

Christkindl Markt on Saturday, Dec. 2, immediately following the Rolla Chamber of Commerce Candy Cane Lane Christmas Parade at 10 a.m. Lichternacht and Christkindl are German-themed events organized by the Rolla Area Sister Cities Association in cooperation with the City of Rolla to promote and support the Sister Cities program with Sondershausen, Germany.

While in Rolla, do not miss a popular local holiday tradition, the 20 th annual Rolla Lions

Club Christmas in the Park Light Display (Dec. 7 – 22). This drive-through event transforms Rolla Lions Club Park into a winter wonderland of various Christmas light displays and arrangements. For a taste of world class theater in a small town venue, attend Ozark Actor’s Theatre’s production of A Christmas Carol (Dec. 8 – 18). With an original screenplay written by local playwrights, this new take on Charles Dickens’s famous story focuses on love as a healing antidote to the bitterness of winter’s cold.

Finally, be sure to visit Ozark Farms for an old-fashioned celebration of giving, tradition,

and family at “Christmas at the Farm” on Dec. 16 from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Santa will make a

special appearance at the farm!

Just a short drive northeast on I-44 will take you to St. Louis, where you will encounter

an incredible selection of Midwest holiday festivities, including the Anheuser-Busch Brewery Lights, the St. Louis Zoo Wild Lights, Christmas Traditions in Historic St. Charles, and the Christmas in St. Louis Tours. If you’re looking for winter wonderlands and frostbite nipping at your nose, you can even participate in a variety of winter sports in St. Louis. The area offers more than 20 ice skating rinks, and you can ski at Hidden Valley Ski Resort in the suburb of Wildwood. Hidden Valley offers 17 trails on 65 acres, with a double peak, 320 foot vertical drop, and utilizes snowmaking technology to create real snow for a white Christmas every year!

Midwest family traditions come to life during the holiday season, making it a popular

travel destination. Christmas is about finding simple joy in familiar traditions, but it is also about creating new traditions. The spirit of Christmas begins in the heart, but the Midwest is a unique and special place for a truly memorable holiday season.
